Dear Father De Pauw:
Thank you for writing to me to express your support for Lieutenant Colonel David L. Sonnier, United States Army, in his request to conduct a traditional Mass at the NATO Support Activity (NSA) Chapel in Brussels. I, too, have found memories of the times we served as part of the American Security Council under the Reagan administration.
I am concerned that the Army would deny this most basic right to our uniformed service members. Attached is a letter from the Army which responds to my inquiry on this matter. I have forwarded this letter to LTC Sonnier. Given the Army's stated commitment to supporting the religious "free exercise" rights of all soldiers, I see no reason why LTC Sonnier's request cannot be accommodated.
I hope that you will find this information helpful. I appreciate greatly your support for LTC Sonnier on this important matter. With very best wishes, I am
